Morehouse Haiti Relief Effort

Just a few days after the news of the devastating earthquake, Jacque Pape and Roosevelt Ducelus (A Morehouse student and Alumni) team up together with Morehouse college to host a major AUC relief effort to collect clothing, non-perishable food, medical items and many more from students and the metro-Atlanta community during a three day drive. All proceeds goes down to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to be distributed to the victims of the earthquake.

With the help of faculty and staff of Morehouse College, students of Morehouse and Spelman and the great effort of Mrs. Gwen Wade (Study Abroad Director) of the Andrew Young Center of International Affairs, Pape and Ducelus have collect an abundance of necessities which is put into mountains of boxes and crates that will make your eyes gape in unbelief. The following video is a documentary of the Morehouse Relief Effort and the absolute thoughtful students who donated all the clothing and other items that they hardly use as their donation to Haiti.

Haiti is in Our Prayers!!

With the Earthquake in Haiti, our prayers and condolences go out to the island nation and those affected by this disaster throughout the world. It is very devastating to see the images of Haiti on CNN and in the New York Times. Our hearts are with those who are highly and directly affected by this. On The Apple Box and The Atlanta University Center have you in our prayers.

The following videos are for the commemoration of the victims of the earthquake. The first video is a collage of input and prayers by AUC students. The President of Morehouse College, Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, also gives us a few words as well on the atrocity.

The second video is created by Ezekiel Philips with beautiful photography provided by Jacques Pape, our photographer of On The Apple Box. Jacques Pape is a native of Haiti. He has friends and family members in Haiti who have been affected by the earthquake. I ask you to please keep a serious prayer for Mr. Pape. Not to long ago, Mr. Pape invited Ezekiel to Haiti for a visit. Ezekiel had a wonderful time with the people of this island nation and enjoyed their culture. So you know he is affected by this, as well. I personally have friends who are from Haiti and praying that their family members are alive. I am very concerned for their well being.

OverDoz's "Crumbling Theory" Lauched!!

OverDoz have given the world a wonderful Christmas Present: Their premier of the most anticipated music video, "Crumbling Theory", Directed by Mac Faulkner and Produced by Ezekiel Philips. This video could take the music industry towards a different aspect on how to make music videos. Also, the music of OverDoz is highly innovate with their style of Hip-Hop, with Rock fused in it to give you a flavor of music that have your senses experience euphoria.

Producer, Ezekiel Philips, have done well hiring Mac Faulkner to Direct the video. Nowadays with the same redundant Hip-Hop videos on BET and MTV, "Crumbling Theory" gives us that fresh air to breath when it regards creativity. The Star Trek motif is comedic and will keep the audience interest mix in heavy with Cannibus innuendos. More of music videos should have a story line to get an A+ with the audience like with "Crumbling Theory" when James T Kush, Mr. Spark, and Bongs McCough is off to find their "magic herb" planet but soon to find their weed-world turned into a barren terrane. Regards towards the making of the video, amazing special effects on board the starship is more than exceptional. It is orgasmic. A lot of the panning and transitions is fluid and precise that you almost think you are watching a movie. Even OverDoz have done a amazing job with their acting. I would like to make a prophecy that they will be on the silver screen one day, to give us a Thespian performance of a soon to be classic. Can I also predict Mr. Philips to produce and direct?

Starting A "New"

Many children yearly go through the pains of being the “new kid”: starting over in a new town – or country – and having to adjust to their new surroundings, as well as coping with having to close a chapter in their life, and the circumstances in which it closed. I was one of them, having moved from an Indiana suburb to the busy city of Miami at the young age of ten. So it was easy to identify with the main character in the short film New Boy, written and directed by Steph Green. Based on the short story by Roddy Doyle, NewBoy tells the story of Joseph, a little African boy starting over in a new school in Ireland. Just as I was, as were many “new boys” and girls before me, Joseph was teased and picked on by his classmates, but was careful to keep his cool and stay silent. However, throughout the film, there are flashbacks of moments he spent back in Africa with his father, who was a school teacher. In these flashbacks lie the real reason for Joseph’s big continental move.

Some may not fully understand the magnitude of Joseph’s back-story, but I think we can all relate to a time where we felt out of place or misunderstood, how fortunate we are if we can find at least one person (no matter how small) to stand up for us, how our past can govern our actions, and how all things come together in the end. However, this film did give me lots of laughs (kids say the darndest things), which served as some great comic relief to go along with this endearing story. Check it out!!

As many of you know, if you ever see Zeek and I in passing at school or in our travels, you will often see us wearing our High-top red Chuck Taylor sneakers. These timeless shoes are most definitely the original tennis shoe and have yet to go out of style.

As an independent film major at Spelman College, students of the AUC will often find me walking across the campuses constantly throughout the day heading to CAU's media arts department to head to the Studios or Editing Labs. This fall semester for my Fundamentals of Film class, I decided to do a cleaver little Chucks commercial to demonstrate the very basics of filmmaking and use of point of view. The great thing about film and photography is the many ways you can take advantage of space and environment to portray just about anything. With the support and efforts of a couple of students from my AUC family, we were able to do a quick and fun project.

Dreams Do Come True in New Orleans!

History is made on December 11, 2009, when Disney released their first African-American Princess movie, The Princess and the Frog, in theaters nationwide. This movie is very culturally significant, being it is the first African-American princess. I had to take my mother and sister to see this movie during opening weekend, because I believe that every black mother and their daughter(s) should see this movie with each other.

Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements (Little Mermaid, Aladdin), the movie sets in New Orleans during the Jazz Age (1920's), with a story about Tiana, a young black lower-class woman, working very hard to make her dream of owning an elaborate restaurant come true. But her aspiration is hindered when she meets a funny and awkward little frog who claims to be a prince and wants to be turned back into human again. The frog prince assumes that Tiana is a princess, and desires to kiss her to be turned back into human again. The frog kisses Tiana but turns her into a frog as well. Thus an adventure of finding how to get both of them back to humans commences.

Prior to the films release, many people were skeptical about many aspects of the film. The top two significances are the prince is not black and the setting, New Orleans. Many view the film to be racist because in order for the main protagonist of the film to be a princess, she has to be a frog first (which is not the case). The best advice to deal with these accusations towards the film is for viewers to go see the film first then make their judgements upon the evidence of the film. Conclusions should not be drawn until the complete viewing of the film.

Overall, and pass racial accusation that the film has, Princess and the Frog is a great movie. Wonderful music and fantastic storytelling. The film stars Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), a Tony Award winning actress and Bruno Campoos (Nip/Tuck) a Brazilian-born actor who voiced for Prince Naveen in the film. Oprah Winfrey, Terrance Howard, John Goodman and Keith David, who plays the evil and demonic Dr. Facilier, are also featured in the film.

Yes, it is mainly a film for kids, but anyone who is a filmmaker or passionate about African-American history have to see this film, because it is certain that Princess and the Frog will be part of African-American History canon.

One thing I love and appreciate is a well made, well directed, well shot, and well thought

out Music Video. After a very interesting past year Mr. Chris Brown is making his way back on

to the scene in a major way. When creative minds of different realms come together as a

collective, there is almost always a genius product. This particular song in itself is very well

produced as it includes a collaboration of some of the top mainstream artists of this time, and

has received great responses since it hit the sound waves. That, however, is not to mention the

bangin' video that was created to complement it.

"I can transform Ya" is a creative piece that stood out to me amongst the many new

videos that have been pushed during this season. There is an exciting display of artistry, as well

Domestic Violence

While we focus on awareness On The Applebox, I wanted to take this time to share with you a piece that was created in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October 2009. During the homecoming season we shared with you all the winners of the Miss Black and Gold Pageant here in the AUC at Morehouse College for the Alpha Rho Chapter. Ms. Lynsey Mitchell (Miss Black and Gold 2009/2010) and I had the pleasure of putting our heads together to create a project that would bring light to a very serious matter that is often ignored. Ms. Mitchell, her court, and myself all were blessed with the opportunity to work with other very talented young women and gain knowledge from insightful individuals. Though this particular project was a very quick make, we know that the content has, can, and will continue to make a difference.

I thank Miss Black and Gold and her Court, the Distinguished men of the Alpha Rho Chapter, as well as Mr. Ali Banks for his editing, and all of the individuals that took part in creating this piece that we each hold dear to our hearts.

The Bible tells us to train up a child in the way that they should go, so when they get old they would not depart.

Majidah Muhammad is most def taking heed to that verse and training up her Pre-K students. How do I know? Because I spent a whole day with her in DC to make sure of that. Not only did I sit in her class from 8am- 3pm, but you already know I had my camera on me... YUP!!! I filmed the whole time while I was there. Being there with the students brought nothing but memories back. Oh! how I reminisced all the way on the plane ride back to Atlanta about how I wish I was a kid again. Majidah opened my eyes to a lot things I was taking for granted. Like the BEAUTIFUL generation thats coming up behind me, and how I will need them to be my doctors & lawyers when I get old. I wouldn't trade that day for anything in the world and I would do anything just to get that day back. It's now days later from when I last saw them and their voices are still in my head. WOW!!! The FUTURE looks good. Check out the video!

The LOVE of a Family

Soul Food is no doubt my FAVORITE family movie. Whenever all the family members are under one roof, spending family time you can always count on the movie Soul Food to do a lil entertaining. The movie touches on so many topics; Love, Patience, Commitment, Greed, and much more. If you were to ask anyone in my family how much I love this movie, they would probably tell you that the movie drove them crazy because I played it so much. The acting in the film was POWERFUL and the story was PHENOMENAL! My whole family isn't with me for Thanksgiving this year but the lady who gave me birth is here with me so I guess its time for some REAL Soul Food!!! Happy Thanksgiving to you all.... Something New

One thing that fascinates me each day here in the Atlanta University Center, is the countless number of strong young Men surrounding us. Young man that will soon be successful entrepreneurs, and business men. Morehouse college in particular often provides seminars, workshops, and classes regarding different aspects of what it takes to become those things.

Recently a marvelous woman by the name of Dr. White, provided a workshop for many of her students on Dinning Etiquette. Not only did this particular workshop include an international perspective, but it was also blessed with words from the always profound President of Morehouse College, Dr. Robert Franklin. So, of course, On The Applebox was there to broaden our horizons and catch the highlights of a incredible evening.

"Precious" is Truly Precious!

"Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire" is now indeed part of the cinema canon! It is a film that everyone should know. A film that everyone should hold dearly to their hearts as long as they live. If you haven't seen it, you have missed half your life! Mo'Nique have given an outstanding performance that no one's eyes have ever experienced in an actress. Her acting is superb in every sense of our five senses, that even Spider-Man's spider sense will tingle in epilepsy! It's that serious of a movie! You have to see it!

Based off the book, "Push" by Sapphire, "Precious" is about a coming of age young African-American girl who is significantly over weight, pregnant by her father for the second time, and abused by her mother on a day-to-day basis. Claireece Precious Jones, played by Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe, must fight to receive better education and escape the iron fist of her mother's tyranny while struggling to gain custody of her children.

Director, Lee Daniels (Monster's Ball, Shadowboxer), is a genius at his prime. He created a fine portrat of the gritty life of a disfunctional relationship of a mother and daughter. Many scenes was shot with handheld cameras to provoke horrific moments and edited with time lapse transitions to emphasizes the importance of what Precious is going through in key moments. I seriously believe that Daniels will get great regards in Hollywood for his remarkable vision of the movie. We can expect to see his next film being sold out as much as "Precious" was during this opening weekend.

The acting is one hundred and ten percent flawless. Mo'Nique have set far beyond the standard for any actor or actress to play the villain. She have frighten the audience with her portrayal of Mary, Precious' mother, and her belligerent ignorance. Sidibe (Precious) have done an enchanting job to make the literary figure come to life with graceful and elaborate acting. She has now become one of the central figures in our movie going hearts, beckoning the universe for us to see another performance of her once again in the future. Paula Patton, Robin Thicke's wife who plays Precious' alternative school teacher, loves to uplift the audience as a kind hearted, tough educator who teaches Precious how to "Push" her limits when life doesn't go the way she wants it to. Mariah Carey is also in the movie as a social worker who helps Precious with her difficult life. It is refreshing to see the wonderful superstar in this movie for her acting is rewarding to watch as well.

Only opened in 18 theaters across the country (New York, Atlanta, Los Angles, and Chicago) in highly African-American populated neigborhoods, it is very important to see this film. This movie is real! It deals with the nature, the depression, the hurt, the shame of domestic violence and the affects of it to a child. It also evokes and clarifies how important education is, no matter how horrible one's life is. I also give high regards to Sapphire for writing the wonderful book, "Push", and encourage anyone to read it.

To some, "Precious" could be just another feel good movie, but to most of us, real movie buffs, it is a work of a masterpiece by Lee Daniels that should be treated as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci.

It is unfortunate that an extraordinary movie about the last days of the baddest entertainer in world history and rehearsals for the biggest show of the century is only in theaters for two weeks, world wide. "This Is It", directed by Kenny Ortega, is a phenomenon. A show that whoever is really interested in show business, fans or no fans of Michael Jackson, have to see this...or they have missed half of their lives!

"This Is It" shows the passion and the commitment, as well as the massive creativity that Michael Jackson has for the largest rock/pop concert of all time. During rehearsal, Jackson does the best he can, in an absolute modest way, to convey what he really wants in the show. He does the best he can not get anyone offended when something does not go his way or whenever something goes wrong. Jackson takes complete control of the show, telling everyone and anyone what he wants, when he wants it, and how he wants it. All the while staying true as a human being with complete understanding of each individual. A true maverick of a artist and a workaholic at his best. It bring tears and heartache while you watch this due to his shocking death, but definitely a corner stone for anyone pursuing a career in this industry. As you watch this movie, I highly encourage you to take notes. The way Jackson treats people on how to make them perform their duties for the show by the way he wants them to is absolute flawless!

The movie also showcases the practices of Jackson's greatest hits such as "Wanna Be Starting Something", "Earth Song", "Billie Jean", "Thriller" and many more. The dancers are highly enthralled to be working with their childhood icon. No matter how rigorous the rehearsals might be, they feel extremely fortunate to be right next to their hero on stage, and would do anything to make the show what it needs to be.

Unfortunate it may be that "This Is It" is only running for a very short two weeks, I highly regard anyone, of any age, to go see this movie, quickly, in it's grand theatrical setting. If not, when it comes out, and I hope it comes out, on DVD...Purchase it! Because if you don't see Michael Jackson in his truest being in his artistry during his final days, you have missed half of your life! Guaranteed!!

We All Start Somewhere

It is true that in this industry we all have to start somewhere.. However, this individual did not just start anywhere. He started right next door, at Clark Atlanta University, the institution in which I am currently receiving my Film education while attending Spelman College.

BRYAN BARBER is a fantastic Filmmaker that began studying under one of my dearest mentors, "Dr. E" here in the AUC, during his undergraduate schooling experience. Since, he has definitely made a name for himself in the industry.

It is not every day that you walk down the street and come across a creative mind like that of Bryan Barber's. With a strong relationship with the outstanding music group Outkast, the three master minds have put their heads together for years to create visual greatness to complement the music. Having directed numerous (theatrical) music videos for the music group, Barber was also the director of the 2006 film Idlewild.

As always, On The Apple Box is always here to deliver.... and this week I had the opportunity to network with Mr. Barber while he came to speak to some of the young film students in the AUC. With many insightful and motivational words in regards to the film industry, I walked away from our discussion with much excitement and energy to continue in my personal pursuits as a filmmaker/artist. One thing we can all learn from Barber's story is that we all do start somewhere, and he started right here in the AUC, so if he can do it, we can do it. BE Passionate On The Apple Box!

Dr. Cornel West once said, "You can't LEAD the people if you don't LOVE the people and you can't SAVE the people if you don't SERVE the people." Chris Bridges, better known as Ludacris, took heed to this very saying.

Ludacris put out the call for people to write essays telling why they deserve to win a car. The call was blasted on radio stations throughout Atlanta and all over twitter. Four thousand people didnt hesitate to write their story. Several people wrote toThe Ludacris Foundation with heart felt stories about why they were deserving of a car. Every person's story was different, from single moms trying to take care of their children to a dad caring for his son with autism.

Roberta Shield, his mother and president of his foundation, spoke tothe crowd as well then it was time to pass out the keys. Each contestant was called to the stage to receive their key. The cars varied in make, model and year, from Nissan Maximums to FordExplorers. Contestants recieved their type of car based on their family size. Not only did they recieve a car, but they were also blessed with thirty days of free gas. Now who wouldn't want that? Many contestants expressed gratitude to Ludacris, but mainly to God. They were very thankful and felt that their lives were forever changed.

RIP SPELMANITE JASMINE LYNN YOU WILL BE MISSED IN THE AUC

It is always saddening when an individual's life is taken, what to us seems to be, all too soon. Ms. Jasmine Lynn, a young Sophomore at Spelman College had her life taken in the midst of a thoughtless act of violence that occurred on Clark Atlanta University's campus last night. A thick layer of mourning is covering the AUC like a shell currently as each Flag is hung at half mass. Unfortunately the memorial services have not yet been announced, however, as a Spelman sister and a Morehouse brother of Ms. Lynn, On The Apple Box wanted to provide our deepest condolences to her family and friends. We hope that you all will be touched and uplifted by the quick memorial that we have provided in her regard, and that your hearts will be filled with remembrance of her amazing life.

As previously stated, the AUC is back and in full effect. When it comes to the Morehouse College Maroon Tiger football team.... They are in it to WIN it. The first football game of the season was LIVE, to say the very least. Stands were filled with students, families, and fans... and as for the field... the Maroon Tigers had absolutely NO MERCY!

In the AUC, the collegiate community in which the two makers of this Blog thrive, we are all about supporting one another and making it to the top of whatever game we play in life. We like to (as Ezekiel Phillips puts it) Feed off of each others energy. 'Man oh Man', were the Maroon Tigers able to Feed off of the enormous amount of positive energy coming from the stands at their first game of the season, and it brought nothing but SUCCESS!

With a win of .....ist. number..... our team showed Atlanta how a season should be kicked off. . and YES as always, we were there to deliver. ON THE APPLE BOX had all cameras on deck, ready to show the world how we get down 'round these parts. So, as always.. Check out the hotness!

With tons of Food, music, and fun, a "pre-academic" function was the perfect AUC Family Reunion! We all know that Atlanta University Center consists of a few of the top HBCUs in the country, so of course the GREEKS are definitely back on the yard and reppin' their organizations.

The excitement did not stop there. People hailing from all three institutions (Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University) were all dolled up and bringing their best "Macking" abilities to the table. With the AUC crowd you can expect nothing less.

Well technically is was the First ride of my life. As most of you know, Ezekiel and I have had quite the summer. Handling what, at times, seems to be never-ending business. The good thing is that we LOVE what we do, and business equals pleasure. No matter the event, we always keep On The Apple Box in mind... and with this particular experience, we definitely brought OTAB along for the ride!

Horse back riding is something that I have always wanted to experience and never had the opportunity to do so. Therefore, while we were working out in LA, Ezekiel decided to show me what its all about! With an awesome mountain trail and a gorgeous view, the experience could not go without being captured. So, hold your breath, because the video will be coming soon, but for now... enjoy the pictures.

Another successful year at the Youth to Leaders Conference thats held annually across the united states.
I am so privileged to have come up out of this conference three years ago when it was held in Houston Texas @ Texas Southern University. Now three years later it was on my Coast which is the WEST COAST. The conference took place at UCLA for over a course of 4 days. The Youth to Leaders Conference is designed to help young people between the ages 13-18 male & females to find their Leader in themselves. TRUST ME the conference is very effective because before I came to the conference back in 06 as a Student Delegate, I thought that the streets was my Leader. After leaving that conference with so many educated young people from all across the states I just knew I needed to CHANGE the way I thought.

I have been extremely busy over the summer with filming and everything but there was no way I was going to miss the conference especially the Talent Show, Community Service Project, or the Closing Banquet!

Speaking of closing Banquet, the speaker of the night was on POINT! of course because she is my Big sister:) Ginene Lewis just graduated from Spelman College & now she is on her way to law school in the fall. She has been a Student delegate since she was 12 and was my counsel leader when I came into the Institute.

I had a GREAT Time & I enjoyed myself at the conference. As you know & can see in the picture with Tavis, I NEVER leave the house without my camera so as soon as Im done with the editing you will have access to it first!:) So until then continue to LEAD LOVE SAVE SERVE.. A lot of people have there own meaning of what Success is. We all heard Drakes perspective and what success is through his eyes. My brother Vinson Muhammad that also attends Morehouse College, has a different look at the word SUCCESS

There isn't a day that goes by that when I see this Brotha Vinson I don't tell him that I want to be like him when I grow up. This brotha kicks things off with POSITIVE ENERGY every time he is encounters a person. Yes & he does it ALL!!! This young man Raps, Acts, Dances, Plays music, & Most Important he SERVES the People. The Great Dr. Cornel West said, "In order to Lead the People you have to LOVE the people & In order to SAVE the people you have to SERVE the people." If you ask me, I think this brotha has the formula down pact, and he is still working to keep it SHARP & to share it with others. . . We all know that Drake came out with a song called "Successful," and it was and still is a number 1 in many books...... Each day brings about new experiences and opportunities when you are On The Apple Box!! This past week, we were able to have a first hand experience with one of Hollywood's Greatest!!!

Yes, none other than Mr. Robert Townsend! If you all recall, we recently did a post on Ms. Skye Townsend who happens to be one of Robert Townsend's very talented daughters. .. Key Word: ONE of his very talented daughters. Ms. Sierra Townsend, a soon to be Spelmanite come this fall, has a rare eye for Fashion! Being one of the Wardrobe heads on the Web Series "Diary of a Single Mom II," (directed/produced by Mr. Townsend) was kind enough to bring us on set to experience the process. As you can see in the picture above we came prepared with the Camera on deck... and just WAIT till you see what we captured. Our time on set was one of a kind, and the tricks of the trade that we learned are definitely invaluable.

The slow climb of separation.

The sense of exhaustion kicks in.

The feeling of satisfaction as the audience stands
to their feet and presents a wall of sound caused by their
amazement in the brilliant "Samba" performance that was
choreographed by Mr. Dmitry Chaplin and danced by Danny and Lacy
on "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 4, One of my favorite pieces
of work on one of my favorite shows EVER!

Forest Whitaker Keep Up the GOOD WORK!!!!

Today was a GREAT DAY! I was blessed to eat at "Simply Wholesome" with the Greatest actor of all time Mr. Forest Whitaker. This guy is a Genius!!

Did you know that Mr. Whitaker was the fourth African American Male to win an Oscar Award for BEST ACTOR? Sidney Poitier opened the doors for this American Actor following Denzel Washington & then Jamie Foxx. No, Forest Whitaker hasn't earned my RESPECT because he grew up in South Central LA and became a STAR in HOLLYWOOD but after reading how he got so DISCIPLINED to do the Role in 2006 film THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. In order to play Idi Amin, Whitaker had to get FOCUSED & do some SERIOUS homework. Not only did he have to gain 50 pounds, but he read books about Amin, watched news and documentary footage, and spent time in Uganda meeting with Amin's friends, relatives, generals, and victims; he also learned Swahili and mastered Amin's East African accent. WOW!!!!!!:O Im SPEECHLESS!!!

Speechless isnt the word that should be expressed when describing my actions after watching him get an Oscar for the movie. I dont believe that a man isnt suppose to cry because I dropped a couple of tears after watching the day he won. Keep up the GOOD work Mr. Whitaker!

Even today its a very touchy subject. Unfortunately, many people choose to walk through life blinded to the fact that it does, in fact, still exist. It is considered a huge RISK when someone decides to bring light to it. When it comes down to it... risk or not... the reminder is very much so needed in today's society. In life, it is often hard for us to step outside of our own shoes and take a look at lives we are leading from an external point of view. Luckily, a few "risk-taking" artists have now done so, and I challenge you all to not take offence, take a step out of your comfort zones, and learn from the information that these young people have provided for us to better ourselves! On The Apple Box?

We KNOW that many of you have looked at our Blog and wondered.... "What the heck is an Apple Box, and why would they name their website after it?" Those of you that have or have interest in working in the film industry, however, understand completely! Apple Boxes can be found on just about any Feature/Television set. They are a "must have" when it comes to the film process. Whether they are being used to sit on in between takes, for cast and/or crew to stand on when necessary for a particular shot, or the many other things they can be used for, it is rare occasions for Apple Boxes to not be present.

Hopefully that clears the confusion, but to help bring more understanding we, of course, had to give yall a visual. The number one act of business for the New Mexico trip was our photo shoot, that was done with the photographer Presley Woodall (also known as the artist OAF)in the Sandia Mountains of Albuquerque, New Mexico (Hope's home town). We hope you all enjoy these few selections from it, but be sure to keep a look out for BIG things to come..... ;)

It's our "Life Camera Action" weekend in New Mexico and we are talking Business Business Business. However, when it comes to Film... Business definitely equals pleasure. For the past two years I have been blessed with the opportunity to work on Season 1 and 2 of the Starz Network Television Series "CRASH". For those of you that don't know, "CRASH" is the show based off of the Academy Award Winning Film, Crash 2004.

As mentioned above, New Mexico is known as the "Land of Enchantment," so for our Photo Shoot weekend I, of course, had to show Mr. Ezekiel what we are all about. New Mexico has a very large growing Film Industry, and we were able to meet with Mr. Bob Baxter, one of the Casting Directors for Crash Season II, who gave us an inside look at the LionsGate Studio (sound stage).

During our visit, we were fortunate to converse with, one of my favorite Producers in the industry, Mr. Lester Berman, Producer of CRASH Series, who gave us very good words of advice and encouragement in our Film pursuits. "The HARD part about being a director is showing up"

Every now and then you NEED to take time for yourself to rest and DETOX! Of course its not an easy process because if it was easy dont you think everybody would be doing it? This is a two day process were you cant eat or drink anything besides the two day detox drink. YES 48 HRS!!!!!! Its not that bad once you make it past your first 24 hrs. This isnt just for cleaning out your system but it helps me to get my MIND right. It shows me that it has to be MIND over MATTER when someone has a good CHIPOTLE burrito in front of them thats smelling good, and you cant eat. It teaches discipline, and it gives you a better sense of awareness. You can purchas the drink from ARDENS GARDEN but thats only if your in Atlanta:( sorry.. There is no worries tho because there are many detox juices that does the same thing. I made a video while I was on my second day to show you that your able to still operate without food.. TRUST me! You wont Die, matter a fact you will be ENERGIZED!!!:)
Its good to go to the spa as well when you are doing your two day detox. I feel as if the spa and the Detox help out one another. People dont understand that after I get my massage and sit and that stem room thats when all my CREATIVE ideas for my film projects start to flow...
NOW it was getting ready to be some MAYHEM at the Atlanta airport! Yeah i forgot that you couldnt bring liquids through the airport but I dint care about missing my flight because Im not with starting something and not finishing it. Of course I satyed out to finish my last day, AND I DID NOT!!! miss my flight because Morehouse College taught me well.. "To be ON TIME is to be LATE, And to be EARLY is to be ON TIME"

Its Sunday, a day to be spent with the family. Its always wonderful when you are able to share your passion with your family to CREATE. Like my dude Zeek, my passion has always been in Acting. However, as I continue to grow as an artist and have had the opportunity of working on a number of Film and Television sets in my hometown in New Mexico, I am gaining an insatiable interest in Film and the the industry as a whole. This past winter I decided to try my hand at Directing/Videography, and was able to collaborate with my father and close friends to create a piece dealing with the realities of relationships between men and women of all ages and ethnicities. The musical treat displayed in the short is a piece by singer/songwriter Glynn David (my father) and guitar genius, Mr. Joe Silva. I was also blessed with the opportunity of working with amazingly gifted and talented choreographer, Alyssa Costales. My girl Aly has been a close family friend for many years, and was excited to invest her talents into the storyboarding and choreography for the project, right off top. Working with family and close friends is an experience that everyone should take advantage of in life if the opportunity is available, and if its not Make It Happen, its well worth it!! Yes its TRUE! I have always wanted to be an actor when I was growing up. Moms had me enrolled in Faith Acting Studios in LA. Every second there was opportunity to audition for the LEAD CHARACTER, you better BELIEVE that I was front in center. Being a firm believer in family, I challenged myself to do a Spike Lee move, and put my family in a project with me like he does with his sister on a lot of his projects. My two family members helped me get back into this acting world. Enjoyment now is not only coming from the directing acting aspect but acting as well. BARBRA STREISAND

I must say that I have somewhat of a bias towards Thursdays, because on Thursdays our focus is on great Actresses, the place in which my personal passion lays. Summer, for me, is the perfect time for me to study my craft as an artist. As I further my research on the original "greats" of film and acting, I cannot go very long without coming across one of my greatest inspirations in the acting realm, Miss Barbra Streisand. Known now primarily for her fantastic singing abilities, Streisand is undeniably an amazing Triple-Threat, and an outstanding Actress. Many of us have seen her play the mother in the ever-so-funny Meet The Fockers 2004. However, in 1969 the Academy named her Best Actress in a Leading Role, for my personal favorite Funny Girl 1968. Talk about an Amazing Woman! As an aspiring black female filmmaker, I am more than inspired when I see fantastic films created by African American Women. Gina Prince-Blythewood is the creator of one of the absolute favorites in and outside of the African American community, Love and Basketball 2000!! This film was also produced by Spike Lee (our other fantastic spotlight Director of the day). All of her films, however, display stories of Love and Acceptance, each leaving you with a sense of HOPE. Amongst numerous television shows/episodes, she has most recently blessed us with the inspirational film, The Secret Life of Bees 2008. BIG shouts to Spike LEE

Congratulations Spike Lee on the 20th Year Anniversary of "Do the Right Thing". This Writer/Producer/Director/Actor has gained much LOVE & RESPECT in not just the African American Community but in the US & around the World. When I look at people like Spike Lee I become more of a witness of the saying "Anything the MIND can Conceive & then Believe can be Achieved" Morehouse College has groomed up yet another visionary student who left with a B.A to later graduate from NYU Film school with his masters degree. I start asking myself what was the difference between Spike Lee & John Singleton other than one is from the West & the other is from the East, and I finally figured it out. Spike Lee is well known for "branding" himself like no other. Majority of the time, you will never NOT catch Spike Lee reppin for his city with his NY hat on his head, and he is not one to bite his tongue for the media. Many of you might remember when he had an issue with Clint Eastwood and addressed his concern at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Lee was making Miracle at St. Anna about an all black U.S. division fighting in italy during world II, criticized director Clint Eastwood for not depicting black Marines in his own WWII film "flags of our fathers". This brutha is about his business and he made it clear when he formed his own production company "40 Acres and A Mule Film-Works"Indeed Lee is a Household name. Sometimes I feel his concern and feel as though we as AFRICAN Americans often don't get the type of recognition we deserve from the Academy. I found an article from nymag.com that was done on spike about " Do The Right Thing" & this is what spike had to say about his film not winning an Oscar from the Academy... Do the Right Thing never won an Oscar.
Remember what Kim Basinger did? Onstage she said, “The best film of the year is not even nominated, and it’s Do the Right Thing.” I didn’t even know her. But when Driving Miss Motherfucking Daisy won Best Picture, that hurt … No one’s talking about Driving Miss Daisynow.

Spike Lee has given a lot of BIG TIME actors a shot to become famous in front of the BIG screen, like MArtin Lawrence, Samuel Jackson and Denzel Washington just to name a few. This guy is a Legend in the Game!

This guy is like Michael Jackson but in the film Industry. Yes MJ could Sing, Dance, Produce a hit...etc... We are acknowledging film producers today but it seems as if I couldn't find a filmmaker that just has producer credits. The HIT MAKER!! Steven Spielberg has done it all from writing, directing, and film producing. Mad respects goes to this man for just being able to touch on so many genres of movies like sci-fi, adventure films, and he has even showed love to the kids with films like Sherek. As the years went on as he played his game in hollywod, his films began addressing such issues as The Holocaust, slavery, war and terrorism. Learning his craft so well he was forced to get his own production company Dream Works. Spielberg has brought much $DENIOR$ to the movie box office which makes you look up to this guy in a major way. Now we all know that its not all about the money people, because if your PASSION isnt in it the $DENIRO$ WONT come. Forbes Magazine said that Steven Spielbergs NET-WORTH is $3.1 Billion WOW:O I can talk about this guy for the next four days. If I were to put all of his credits on this Post it would take up 4 pages..lol.. Here are Two of my favorite films from child hood to adult hood.

Yes Indeed we are starting this week off with our GREAT Film Writers. Today is monday and we will be recognizing some of the writers that have been putting in work throughout HOLLYWOOD! Of course I have to show some love for the West Coast as well as my city in which I was born and raised-Los Angeles Ca... Drum Roll Please... How did you know? Yes John Singleton it is! Many of us just think he directed "Boyz N The Hood" but he also wrote the screen play for this film. After winning several awards at USC's Film Writing Program, Singlenton exploded onto the scene with his first film, Boyz N the Hood (1991), a tough, intelligent, plain speaking look at friends in gang-ridden South Central L.A that earned him Oscar nominations for Best Original Screen Play and Best Director, becoming the first African American (and the youngest filmaker ever) to do so. WOW!!!:O

The Coen Brothers are the dynamic duo of filmmaking. As I watch and study more about the industry and watch documentaries and the Reelz Channel, I constantly come across the name "COEN". So, of course I had to find out what all of the excitement was about. Though its Monday and the focus is on Writers, The Coen Brothers, amongst many filmmakers, can be considered outstanding in multiple categories. Ethan and Joel are the Writers of one of my personal favorites: O Brother, Where Art Thou?, as well as the Academy's Best Motion Picture of the Year in 2008: No Country for Old Men. Their amazing writing (and more) talents are displayed in many other Motion Pictures, so be sure to check them out, and look forward to their many films to come.

Ok so Im back in the ATL SHAWTY. I had to go show my R.E.S.P.E.C.T to the GREAT King of Pop Michael Jackson where it all got started in Detroit Michigan @ Motown. There were sooo Many people out showing their respect as well. Making the video tribute for MJ just didnt feel like enough so I put down flowers and balloons. O and I cant forget that I had to cop one of those HOT Mj shirts they had out there on the streets for the TEN! If you dont have a Shirt you better stop playing and get you one... Last but not least, THANKS to this man for getting it all started at Motown. Mr. Berry Gordy... I didnt know that the city named the street after him. Thats MAJOR!

Im not a Morhehouse Man yet but my heart is waiting for the day I walk that stage. I can remember the first day I became a man of Morehouse 2 years ago, it was one of the BEST feelings in the world! Mothers & Fathers ask me like everyday if I thought Morehouse college would be the best school for their son. I wouldnt change my answer if I had the WORST day at school, YES YES YES!!!! This school is where MEN SHARPING MEN! Just like IRON SHARPING IRON, I dont know of any place like it! I woke up this morning with the word LOVE on my spirit. This should not feel odd the way it felt today, because its suppose to be an everyday feeling. This feeling made me turn on my Ipod to set it on my Oldies but Goodies play list. I really don't know what was in the atmosphere in those times of the GREAT O'Jays but whatever it was, it needs to come back. Men weren't afraid to express there true feelings, and women understood that without their support then it would be difficult for men to make it. Yes we all know the saying "Behind Every STRONG Man Is A STRONG Woman". I decided to give all my fellas out there a task today, and not just today but everyday. The task will be to compliment our BEAUTIFUL women in this world. They mean so much to us.
